Barroom philosopher and street-corner soothsayer Tom Waits shambled onto the music scene in the early 1970s with a barfly-turned-beat poet persona and a voice that sounded like it had been used to dredge the Erie Canal. He rapidly became a critical and hipster darling, and his subsequent forays into acting and film music only served to cement his reputation. INNOCENT WHEN YOU DREAM, a spellbinding compendium of over 40 interviews and articles from Waits`s early years up to 2004, captures the artist at his loquacious best and his rambunctious worst--the latter displayed to good effect in a transcript from a 1970s Australian TV show, where a jet-lagged and tipsy Waits slurs and non-sequiturs his way through a rapidly disintegrating interview with an increasingly confounded host. There`s an illuminating chat with NPR`s Terry Gross, as well as an intriguing conversation with a verbose Elvis Costello obviously out to impress Waits, whose mordant interjections are simultaneously hilarious and prickly.
