Halberstam is a graduate of Harvard, 1959. He got an early start in journalism with The Nashville Tennessean, where he worked from 1956 through 1960. His experiences helped shape one of his major works, THE CHILDREN, which is based on the civil rights movement and his experiences down South. THE FIFTIES is a popular history of this decade, and includes treatments of Elvis, civil rights, and the Beats. Halberstam worked in Africa, Europe and the East for the New York Times, and received the Pulitzer Prize for his reporting on the war in Vietnam. These experiences contributed to another big book, THE BEST & THE BRIGHTEST. Halberstam has a love of sports, and his books on baseball, basketball, and rowing have their fans. THE SUMMER OF 49 chronicles the rivalry between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox, and is considered a classic. OCTOBER 1964 chronicles the end of the Yankee dynasty. His friendship with the Kennedys resulted in THE UNFINISHED ODYSSEY OF ROBERT KENNEDY. During the '60s and '70s Halberstam was associated with Harper's magazine, and he also wrote for Esquire.
