One.Three.Seven Full Description
Electronic music can be intentionally soulless and sterile at its most starkly modern, which gives Zohar's emotive ethnic electronica an immediate advantage. With influences that well precede Elvis -- the tradition of Jewish cantors and Muslim muezzins -- blended with modern percussive implements, Zohar realizes some expressly new combinations. Brits Andrew Kremer and Erran Barron Cohen invited several Middle Eastern notables to provide vocals, most of which come in the form of ancient-sounding chants. The result, to Western ears, is compellingly exotic. The standout "Angel" begins with a wah-wah and a frog sound that builds into a swirling vocal, but many of the other selections are equally hypnotic. Since too much modern music grows incrementally and only rehashes some recent trend, these nice Jewish boys get major points for reaching a bit farther back. CHARLES BERMANT (September 10, 2001)
