True to its handle, this Texas trio offers mostly straight-down-the-middle power pop on its new album, The Harsh Light of Day. The only significant change from their breakthrough effort, 1998's All the Pain Money Can Buy, is more expensive, expansive-sounding production and an increasingly overt Beatles influence in both the songs and sonics. Harsh highlights include "Wind Me Up" (which sounds very much like Elvis Costello backed by Band on the Run-era Wings), the rousing "You're an Ocean" (which features one-time Beatles-backer Billy Preston in fine form on barroom piano) and the lovely lament "Funny How It Fades Away."
